FOUND A HOSPITAL...HERE WE GO
As I did not have insurance when I was diagnosed I had paid for all of my diagnostic proceedures with my credit card because I thought The Lump was just a lump. Each procedure was more and more expensive. The Doctors kept telling me that "it was probably nothing."
When it turned out to be a lot more than nothing I was panic stricken.
My Brother-in-Law found an organization called The Breast and Cervical Cancer Treatment Program. It is a government program designed to take care of people like me who have no insurance but who need help immediately. Please check out the Helpful Websites section for more info about this amazing organization.
Being part of a government assisted program is not like checking into a regular part of the hospital and getting to see a doctor at your appointed time. The Clinic is open only one day a week. And there are many, many patients there.
I got in line at least an hour before my appointment with other breast cancer patients and waited for anywhere from 1-3 hours to be seen. Never by the same doctor.
Harbor UCLA is a teaching hospital which I totally loved. There are lots of wonderful medical students there observing all of the exams. It was cool because I was learning along with them. I encouraged them to touch my Lump and give me their thoughts. I think it freaked them out a little.
Every Tuesday I would be there with my Husband. And we would wait to be seen and hope for more info. Some days we'd be there and there would be no answers for us. It was a very, very long process. I knew I had cancer. That was all I knew. And so we waited for...
Waiting to get into the program
FINALLY GOT SOME ANSWERS
Actually got the genetic testing done and tested NEGATIVE for BRCA 1and 2. Now that's a test you want to flunk! I now know that my sisters are safe and My Son is safe from predispositions to colon and pancreatic cancers.
